Holy Grail Product: Lina Hanson Global Face Serum

I just finished my bottle of Lina Hanson Global Face Serum and thought it was about time I write about it. I knew I had to have it after reading green celebrity makeup artist Katey Denno’s blog, The Beauty of It Is. She mentions using it to prep clients skin before makeup like she did here on the beautiful Olivia Wilde.

I started using it during the winter time while my skin is even more sensitive, red and dry than normal. It wasn’t enough to use on it’s own so I wore MV Organics Rose Soothing and Protective Moisturizer on top and my skin felt comfortable and wore well under my makeup.

Now that the weather has warmed up I am able to wear it on it’s own. It really plumps up my skin and provides a smooth canvas for my makeup. I apply it on damp skin and it absorbs in quickly without leaving me looking greasy. I’ll usually dry my hair after applying to let it completely absorb before applying my makeup. It wears well under powder, creme and liquid foundations. And like it claims the scent is very uplifting and happy. Best of all it doesn’t irritate my skin or cause breakouts. It keeps my skin calm and balanced.

My previous favourite daytime moisturizer before I cleaned up my products was Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer. I no longer miss it thanks to Lina Hanson!

Have I repurchased? Yes! The Detox Market recently had an amazing Victoria Day sale which I took full advantage of.

Have you used Lina Hanson? What are your thoughts? I’m curious to try the Body Serum next 🙂

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Holy Grail Product: Lina Hanson Global Face Serum

May 2015 Empties

1. Rare El’ements Essential Conditioner

This is such a luxe conditioner and kept my hair in good shape throughout the winter. It also doubles as a great hair mask. It’s too moisturizing for me for the warmer months but as soon as fall hits I’ll be repurchasing this. And the fiancee approved of this too which is huge. We are currently using Dr Hauschka’s conditioner which he says is too thin and not conditioning. Sometimes I think he should write reviews because he’s so hard to impress 🙂

2. Lotus Wei Infinite Love Energy Mist

I’ve mentioned using the perfume of this scent which I prefer more just because the scent lasts longer. I’ve never had more compliments on the way I smell as when I’m wearing Lotus Wei. I will continue to buy this forever.

3. La Bella Figura Jardin de Fleurs

I’ve written about this in a previous post as well and my opinion still holds true. Although I have yet to repurchase this I will be soon. I’m trying to finish up my less favourite toners first but man, it’s hard living without this one. It hydrates and helps your serums and lotions really absorb into your skin.

4. Weleda Wild Rose Deodorant

I have to wear a different deodorant depending on what I’m wearing. I notice my Soapwalla and Meow Meow Tweet can show up in delicate fabrics like silk so this is where the Weleda deodorant comes in. I’ve already repurchased this in the Citrus scent which is fresh and lemon scented. I love the ease of just throwing this in my bag and being able to just spray it on versus using a cream which I have to apply with my fingers.

5. La Bella Figura Aria Nighttime Cell Recovery Treatment

I originally used this along with Fig Renewal Serum and I wasn’t really impressed but I continued to use them both (together) hoping the results would come. It wasn’t until I stopped using the Fig Renewal Serum that I fell in love with this treatment. To be honest I still haven’t found a night time treatment as effective as Estee Lauder’s Night Repair but this comes close. Together with the Jardin de Fleurs my skin feels hydrated and firm when I wake up in the morning. I would repurchase this but haven’t as I’m experimenting with a few other treatments by Odacite at the moment.

6. RMS Un Cover Up in 11

I’m shocked I didn’t finish this sooner but this was one of the first make up products I bought when I went green. This is a dream for anyone with dry skin. I used it as both a concealer and foundation with a bit of RMS Un Powder overtop to set. I’ve already repurchased it since it’s one of my most used makeup products.

If you are thinking of switching over your makeup I really recommend starting with a brand like RMS. Their products are so multipurpose and nurturing, they really feel like pigmented skincare.

That’s all for now! What did everyone finish up last month?

1. Curelle’s Energe Shampoo & Treslite Conditioner (not pictured)

This shampoo is a great alternative and much cheaper option to Yarok’s Feed Your Volume. This has no essential oils which can be irritating. Yarok definitely gives more oomph but this is a cheaper and gentler option. This was my second bottle and I will be repurchasing in the future.

The conditioner was not my favourite but only because I need more moisture for my thick hair. My fiancee however loved it. I continued to use it instead as a shaving cream which I liked (but not as much as Dr Bronners shaving gel). I would buy this again but for my fiancee 🙂

If you are on a budget Curelle is definitely a brand to check out! They sell 500ml bottles for around $18. Everything they make is unscented, gluten-free, vegan, plant derived and of course cruelty-free. If you live in Toronto you can find them at Noah’s Natural Foods otherwise look on their Facebook Page for more info.

2. Weleda Wild Rose Creamy Body Wash

I love the smell of rose scented things and this is no exception. This was purchased on recommendation by my friend and I’m already on my second tube of it. It’s hydrating and rinses clean. The smell sadly disappears once you wash it off. Since going green I had been using bar soaps as they have less ingredients than liquid and typically do not contain aloe in (which I’m allergic to). Luckily this one is aloe-free which is a blessing to me.

3. La Bella Figura Barbary Fig Renewal Serum

I can’t give a fair review of this because it made me realize I’m intolerant to pineapple! I purchased this along with LBF’s Aria serum and was using them together. Once I finished this my skin became less irritated. I love Aria serum and will post about it separately soon.

4. Similasan Dry Eye Relief Drops

My eyes are always dry and itchy especially in the winter. These eye drops are so soothing I always buy two bottles at a time because I would hate to run out. I tried using Clear Eyes after using these for over a year and it burned the heck out of my eyes. Similasan is an all natural homeopathic company with all kinds of herbal remedies. You can find them easily at any health store, Shoppers and even at Wal Mart. The price is a bit steep (around $17) but worth it.

5. Dr Bronners Baby Castille Soap (not pictured)

I’ve mentioned this before but this is one of my favourite green items. I use this for cleaning, hand washing my delicate clothes and washing my makeup brushes.

Have you used any of these products before? What have you finished up lately?

Green Beauty Fails Part 1

One of my pet peeves about a lot of blogs are the lack of unfavourable reviews. I get it. You want to write about things you like as opposed to what you don’t. You return or give them away, buy something else and they disappear from your memory. But I like to hear both sides of the coin. Here’s hoping you do too.

Dr. Hauscka’s Liquid Eyeliner

My friend Anne Marie told me she liked this and I always trust her opinion but we agree to disagree on this one. The liner may be a worthy one but the brush it comes with made me so frustrated I couldn’t bother. The hairs all stick out in crazy directions and don’t lie flat making it impossible to have a precise line. I’ve read a few reviews saying the same thing. The ingredients are lovely and non irritating so it’s a shame this did not work out. Maybe they will make a new one in the future?

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Alcohol, Sorbitol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Bentonite, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Euphrasia Officinalis Extract, Hydrogenated Jojoba Oil, Xanthan Gum, Beeswax (Cera Alba), Rosa Damascena Flower Wax, Rosa Damascena Flower Oil, Fragrance (Parfum), Citronellol*, Geraniol*, Linalool*, Silica, Lysolecithin, Iron Oxides (CI 77499), Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Ultramarines (CI 77007)

Yarok’s Feed Your Hold Hairspray

It is with a heavy heart that I tell you I do not like this hairspray. I love Yarok and was expecting to love this too. It claims to be non sticky and that it will not weigh your hair down but I can tell you that it does both these things. I use hairspray to keep my bangs in place and this holds them down but also makes my hair stick together…not a good look. I purchased Rahua’s hairspray yesterday which feels much lighter but have yet to try it out.

Ingredients: structured vitamin aqua (water) concentrate, non-GMO corn extract, vegetable glycerol, plant sourced kosher vegan xanthan gum & potassium sorbate; natural plant sourced vitamins A, C & E; essential oils of: Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) & litsea cubeba (may chang)

Province Apothecary’s Moisturizing Cleanser & Make Up Remover

This is not a failure of a product by any means however it is not something you want to use to remove makeup unless you wear very little and are using a muslin cloth or Clarisonic every time you cleanse. I didn’t realize how much I disliked this until I started using One Love Organics Vitamin B Cleansing Oil which literally melts makeup off your face with little to no effort (which is what I was looking for). If you have very sensitive and dry skin you may love this.

Ingredients: Sunflower Seed Oil*, Jojoba oil*, Avocado oil*, Evening Primrose oil*, Raspberry Seed oil*, GMO-free Vitamin E, Rosemary leaf extract, and therapeutic essential oils of: Bergamot, Lavender*, Frankincense* and Petit grain. *Certified organic ingredient. Our Bergamot is Bergamotene-free (not photo-toxic)

That’s all for this time. Please let me know of any green beauty products I should stay away from and why 😉

Green Beauty Fails Part 1

February 2015 Empties

I am happy to say I have repurchased every item on my February empties list!

1. Yarok’s Feed Your Ends Leave In Conditioner

I’ve mentioned this in the past. Despite the name I don’t use this on my ends (for that I like Yarok’s Shine serum) but on the upper half of my hair. I torture my hair washing and blowdrying it everyday so a heat protectant is a must. This was the first green one I tried and I haven’t had to try anything else because I love it so much. I always have a back up bottle because I couldn’t live without it.

2. Yarok’s Feed Your Moisture Shampoo

This little baby of 2 oz cost $15.00 and lasted me a week and a half of washing my hair everyday – yikes. Luckily I loved it and quickly ordered the full size (12 oz for $48.00) as soon as I ran out. Unlike the Feed Your Roots shampoo this doesn’t irritate my scalp. A great “everyday” shampoo. In case you’re wondering I have repurchased the Feed Your Roots which I reserve for every once in awhile. It deep cleans and makes my hair look great but is too clarifying for everyday use.

3. Lotus Wei’s Infinite Love Perfume

I’ve mentioned this before as well. My love continues to grow for this rose-y perfume. My only wish is for it to be in a bigger bottle one day with a glass lid vs. the plastic lid which breaks every time on me.

What have you used up recently? Any repurchases?

La Bella Figura Jardin De Fleurs

I recently repurchased this hydrating facial mist. After finishing my first bottle I decided to try something new (and cheaper). Ah I should have known better. This is something I never realized I needed and first bought on a whim. It wasn’t until I was without that I realized – I can’t live without this!

What is is exactly?

From labellafigura.com:

A Hydrating Floral And Enzyme Mist With Super Low Weight Hyaluronic Acid

Jardin de Fleurs Skin Revitalizer refreshes and softens skin while gently restoring elasticity and promoting the renewal of damaged skin cells. Raw Coconut Water and super low weight Hyaluronic Acid deliver and hold intense hydration in connective tissue between cells leaving skin plump, moist and dewy. This awakened state of the skin helps for easy absorption of active serums and moisturizers and effective delivery for high performance. Edelweiss Extract and White Peony soothe and calm and help balance PH levels in the skin. Honeysuckle, Jasmine, Rose Damascena and Carrot Seed Hydrosols aid in reducing skin inflammation and help to create a protective layer for sensitive skin. Helichrysum, Licorice Root and Plantain Leaf target brightness in tone and help stimulate active cell growth.

Ingredients: Jasminum Officinale (Jasmine) Flower Water, Raw Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Juice/Water*, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Flower Water, Centaurea Cyanus (Cornflower) Water, Helichrysum Italicum Distillate*, Japonica (Honeysuckle) Flower Water, Daucus Carota (Carrot Seed) Water, Leontopodium Alpinum (Edelweiss) Extract*, Camellia Sinesis (White Peony) Extract, Hibsicus Sabdariffa Flower Extract*, Glycrrhiza Glabra (Licorice Root) Extract*, Cereus Grandiflorus (Cactus) Flower Extract, Plantago (Plantain) Lanceolata Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Vegetable Glycerin, Leuconostoc (Radish Root) Ferment Filtrate, Ethyl Alcohol (Non-GMO)*

*Certified Organic

Skin Type: Skin seeking deep cellular hydration and new collagen promotion. Excellent for mature, dry and acne prone skin. Not recommended for sensitive or allergy prone skin.

Suggested Use: Use before applying active serums, treatments or moisturizers or after applying makeup to set and create a dewy finish. Use anytime of the day to awaken dry or dull skin and boost hydration. After cleansing, mist onto face, neck and décolletage. May be used on a cotton pad as a toner or gentle cleansing treatment.

The effects of this remind me of Laura Mercier’s Skin Perfecting Water Moisture Mist, undoubtedly one of my most beloved skincare products of the past. I use it the same way: after washing and toning, I spray this on and immediately apply my serums/moisturizers. Without this I find my moisturizer is not quite enough even when applied on damp skin. I could get away without this in the summer but wintertime forget it. My skin feels less tight and my makeup applies smoother. It’s also wonderful to mist overtop mineral foundation if you’ve gone overboard and applied too much.

When I was younger (I’m 30 by the way), I wanted to wear as much makeup as possible to cover up my skin. Now that I’m older I want to wear as little makeup as possible – and products like this one allows me to do so.

By the way, this Clementine Fields video is what sold me on buying this the first time.

Have you tried Jardin de Fleurs?

Travel Essentials

I went on a short trip to NYC with my sister in October and thought it would be fun to post my beauty must haves. We did check our bags so I didn’t have to measure my products out which I never have the patience for.

From left to right

Yarok Feed Your Ends Leave In Conditioner: I’ve repurchased this again and again. It is a heat protectant and nourishes dry ends. It never makes hair look oily and smells divine.

Ingredients: vitamin aqua (water), Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil, Olea europaea (olive) oil, Vitis vinifera (grapeseed) oil, Prunus armeniaca (apricot) oil, Oenothera biennis (primrose) oil, plant sourced kosher vegan xanthan gum & potassium sorbate; essential oils of: Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) & Litsea cubeba (may chang)

Province Apothecary Moisturizing Cleanser and Make Up Remover: This is an oil based cleanser and feels lovely. It doesn’t get my makeup off as well as I would like. Since finishing this I’ve switched to another cleanser which so far I like better and will write about in the future 🙂 I would repurchase but I’m not running out to get it anytime soon.

Ingredients: Sunflower Seed Oil*, Jojoba oil*, Avocado oil*, Evening Primrose oil*, Raspberry Seed oil*, GMO-free Vitamin E, Rosemary leaf extract, and therapeutic essential oils of: Bergamot, Lavender*, Frankincense* and Petit grain. *Certified organic ingredient. Our Bergamot is Bergamotene-free (not photo-toxic)

Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil: a dose of vitamin A and essential fatty acids for your face, this is God-sent for those with sensitive and dry skin like myself. I prefer to use it at night but it wears beautifully under makeup as well.

Ingredients: Rosehip fruit and seed oil blend – Andean Rosehip oil is renowned for its skin healing properties. High concentrations of Pro-Vitamin A, Carotenoids and Omegas 3, 6, 7 & 9 work together to restore the appearance of damaged skin. Concentrated Gamma Linolenic Acid restores softness and suppleness.

rosa canina (rosehip CO2) seed extract*, rosa canina (rosehip CO2) fruit extract*, mixed tocopherols (natural vitamin e)

*Certified Organic by the Soil Association (Organically produced 99.8% of product).

Dr. Bronners Rose Castile Soap: Ah this magic soap. It can be used for an assortment of things including washing your floors, brushing your teeth, shampoo, shaving and bodywash. I carry the mini version with me in my purse always. This way I never have to use that awful neon pink soap that seems to be in every restaurant bathroom. I have a large bottle of this at home for washing my delicates and makeup brushes. Thinking about going green? This would be the perfect product to start off with!

Ingredients: Water, Organic Coconut Oil*, Potassium Hydroxide**, Organic Olive Oil*, Natural Rose Fragrance, Organic Hemp Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil, Citric Acid, Tocopherol

Lotus Wei Infinite Love perfume: “Honey citrus floral” Exquisite Rose, Red Mandarin, & Honey. Not only does this perfume make you smell wonderful it makes you feel wonderful too. I’m on my fourth bottle of the year making it the most expensive perfume I’ve ever bought but it is worth every penny. I truly feel different using this. It’s not just a perfume it’s literally an experience.

EXPERIENCE: Unconditional love for yourself & others; attract love + affection, enhanced magnetism, attractiveness + charisma. Magnifies gentleness, compassion, softness + receptivity.

DISSOLVES: Irritation, being hard on yourself, hard heart, feeling attacked, resentment, anger, jealousy, codependency, giving away all your energy to others and forgetting your own needs, past trauma, breaking through old patterns

Lotus Wei is based on flower alchemy:

For every mood and feeling there is a flower. Choose a flower and change your life.

I think back to all the toxic perfume I used to wear and hang my head in shame. Spraying myself with chemicals, triggering migraines and who knows what else.

Ingredients: Certified Organic *Vitus Vinifera (Grape Alcohol), essential oils of *Citrus deliciosa (Red Mandarin), *Pelargonium roseum (Rose Geranium), Monarda fistulosa (Monarda), Cymbopogon citrates (Lemongrass), Rosa damascena (Rose absolute), Rosa damascena (Rose Wax), and Apies millifera (Beeswax Absolute), and hand-collected flower essences of Bauhinia blakeana (Hong Kong Orchid), Epilobium augustifolium (Fireweed), Magnolia liliflora (Pink Magnolia), Hieracium aurantiacum (Hawkweed), Nelumbo nucifera (Lotus) and gem essence of Pink Tourmaline. *Certified Organic.

Soapwalla’s Deodorant Cream: While my man goes through a deodorant stick every few weeks I am still on my first tub of this I bought about 12 months ago. I do alternate between this and Weleda’s Rose Deodorant spray but Soapwalla is more travel friendly (and lasts much longer).

Ingredients: (*: certified organic, +: food-grade)
Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Oil*; Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Oil*; Rosehip Seed Oil*; Butyrospermun parkii (Shea) Butter; Corn Starch*+; Sodium Bicarbonate+; Kaolin Clay; Vegan Kosher Glycerin*+; a custom blend of essential oils, including: Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender)*; Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree)*; Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange); Mentha Piperita (Peppermint)*; Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergaptene-free Bergamot)*; Non-GMO Soy lecithin*+; Non-GMO Vitamin E*+.

Living Libations Seabuckthorn Shampoo (Not pictured): This is thus far, my absolute favourite natural shampoo (Yarok is a close 2nd or 3rd). It’s gentle on the scalp and makes my hair feel clean and voluminous. This seems to be a triumph in the world of natural shampoo, at least in my experience.

Ingredients: Organic and/or wild crafted ingredients with pure spring water: herbal infusions of calendula, red clover, oats, coltsfoot, horsetail, comfrey, nettles, chamomile, and bladderwrack seaweed in golden jojoba oil; yucca and coco-protein to saponify; orange wax; supercritical extracts of seabuckthorn berry, sage, and rosemary; and essential oils of grapefruit, peppermint, vetiver, and lime.

My makeup bag was not as low maintenance and will be featured in another post.

What are your travel essentials? Have you used any of these products too?
